Shadow used to be a rival of Sonic The Hedgehog, or still sort of is....
Shadow was once evil because Dr. Eggman created him to destroy Sonic and steal all the master emeralds, that was until he met Maria, his love for protecting this sweet girl changed his heart and made him pretty much a good guy. In the series "Sonic X" Maria was killed and he was devastated and decided to do what she would want him to do.
